[LIVE-SMACK!] Play-By-Play of Invicta FC 3!

STUDIO MMA, AUSTIN, TX — For the second night in a row, we’re giving you the blow-by-blow of a major MMA event.  This time the women get to shine as Invicta 3 kicks off in Kansas City, KS.  If the first two Invicta events were any indication, we are in for a night of barn burners.  Featured fighters include Jessica Penne, Shayna Baszler, Kaitlin Young, and Leslie Smith.  Giddyup.

Featherweights

KATALINA MALUNGAHU
EDIANE GOMES

Round 1

Gomes wings some left hooks that miss, then a front kick.  Nice start.  Big overhand from Katalina lands.  And another one that hurts Gomes.  Katalina attacks, but Gomes survives.  Now Gomes with the double-leg takedowna and she’s immediately looking for an ankle.  Katalina holding guard now.  Gomes looking to land some heavy fists.  Katalina kicks her off and they’re back up.  Another big overhand from Katalina lands.  She’s tough, but Gomes drives in for a double.  She drags Katalina to the ground and is on top in half-guard. Gomes throwing an dlooking to pass.  Katalina doing a good job of protecting.  Gomes into full mount now.  Katalina turns over and Gomes looking for the RNC.  Katalina in trouble.  The arm is under the chin.  Can Katalina survive?  Now Gomes twists into mount and is throwing big fists and hammers.  Katalina in all kinds of trouble here.  Gomes has a remarkable ground game.  She’s looking for a side choke, but no.  Now pounding again.  Katalina surviving.  Gomes locks in another choke and it’s over!  Malungahu taps.  Gomes impresses!

Strawweights

KAIYANA RAIN
TECIA TORRES

Round 1

Here we go.  They tap.  They dance and Kaiyana is the larger fighter.  Rain sidesteps a kick.  They collide.  Rain blocks a head kick and then assaults.  Rain with a  front kick that is answered with a straight right by Torres.  Leg kick from Torres.  Rain with a  leaping head kick, blocked.  Now they clinch against the cage.  Turning in circles.  Rain with double unders.  Big knee from Rain, and another.  Torres looking for elbows.  Still clinched here.  Another knee exchange.  Rain with some dirty boxing.  They spin again.  Still in the clinch, exchanging knees.  Dirty boxing from Torres.  Both women throwing punches on the inside.  This looks exhausting.  Rain looks for a spinning back fist.  Head kick misses for Torres and Rain lands a straight right.  They are both swinging and Torrest has hurt Rain with a combo flurry.  Rain backs up across the cage and then clinches again.  Nice hands by Torres.

Lots of action in that round.  Nice knees from Rain, but Torres stole the round with some fast hands at the end.  10-9  Torres.

Round 2

Both women still look fresh.  They exchange body kicks.  Rain the aggressor.  Big knee lands for Rain.  Great exchange.  Rain changing levels.  Head kick from Rain is blocked.  They clash.  Rain stalking.   Nice spinning heel kick from Rain.  Great strike.  Now they square up and throw.  Torres lands a left.  Action slowing.  Rain ducks a right and gets the body lock, looking for a takedown.  She can’t get it and they both miss with right hands.  Grueling fight from these 115-pounders.  Rain with a front kick and a jab that lands, but Torres returns a nice combo.  And now she’s stalking.  Rain ducks another haymaker and clinches.  They grapple.  Rain lands a right on the break.  Leg kick from Torres and a missed high kick.  Rain lands a nice right and a body kick at the bell.

Very active round.  Rain was stalking.  No damage on either side, but Rain more aggressive, giving her the 10-9.

 

Round 3

These ladies need to leave it all in the cage.  Rain attacks for a single-leg, but Torres again with a nice combo in response.  Head kick close for Rain.  Leg kick from Rain and another combo from Torres.  Rain with a right lead hook.   Rain looking for the takedown and has some hooks against the cage.  Torres turns it around and throws a combo.  Rain with a  jab.  Rain again locking up the clinch.  Torres turns it around.  And around again.  Torres trying to throw a knee.  Another one.  They are connecting with Rain’s face.  Rain is bleeding now.  Big right lands for Rain and they’re back to the center.  They trade.  Torres in and out.  Big left from Torres.  Rain attacking, but Torres inflicting the damage.  Rain has the body lock, but can’t get the takedown.  Torres with an elbow and sidekick.  Torres catches a kick.  Rain tries to throw her with a headlock.  Torres gets Rain’s back in the scramble and throws hammer fists until the bell.

Torres has some speed and skills.  She impressed in that round and earned the 10-9, giving her the 29-28 win in our view.

RESULT: Torres by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27), Round 3.

 

Bantamweights

MARCIEA ALLEN
JESSAMYN DUKE

Round 1

Duke is very tall at 5’11”.  She’s popping in and out.  Nice right from Allen and a leg kick.  These girls throw hard.  Leg kick from Duke.  She’s throwing jabs and 1-2’s.   Duke has amazing reach.  Nice lead left and a straight right now.  Allen attacking now with fast hands.  Great boxing on both sides.  Some overhands from Duke.  Superwoman punch from Allen lands.  She attacks Duke against the fence and has double underhooks.  Duke defending well.  Allen throws a knee.  Duke gets an underhook and throws Allen to the ground.  Allen has half guard and is hanging on tight.  Duke trying to posture and pass.  Allen looks for the reversal, but Duke grabs an ankle.  Let’s see if she can lock this in.  Duke is on her back and Allen is throwing big bombs.  Allen complaining about something and takes out her mouthpiece.  Allen responds by pounding away.  A strange moment!  Now Duke locks in the armbar.  It’s tight.  She goes belly down and Allen taps!  Great fight!

RESULT: Duke via Submission (armbar), Round 1.

Duke was complaining about getting her hair pulled during that fight.  She won nonetheless.  Duke is the real deal and still undefeated.

 

Atomweights

AMY DAVIS
STEPHANIE FRAUSTO

Frausto streaks across the cage and attacks.  She gets the takedown and is throwing some bombs.  Davis looking to scramble to her feet.  She tries to trip Frausto who falls to her back and cranks the guillotine.  Davis taps and that’s it.  A quick and impressive tilt from Frausto!

RESULT: Frausto by Submission (guillotine), Round 1.

 

 

Strawweights

JOANNE CALDERWOOD
ASHLEY CUMMINS

Round 1

Calderwood with a significant height advantage.  They circle in the center and exchange jabs.  Calderwood changing levels and know throwing a lead left hook.  She jabs and darts.  Calderwood has her left hand at her waist, baiting Cummins.  The women circle and feint.  Finally Cummins attacks and pushes Calderwood to the fence.  Calderwood lands a knee, but Cummins responds with a hard right.  They’re back to the center now.  Calderwood with some nice jabs that are finding their marks.  Calderwood lands a hard left hook and know a nice left jab.  Cummins is hurt.  Calderwood throws a big knee to the ribs and Cummins collapses!  The ref waves it off.  That was a vicious knee!  And Cummins is writhing in pain on the ground.

RESULT: Calderwood by TKO (knee), Round 1.

 

Strawweights

LYNN ALVAREZ
CARLA ESPARZA

Round 1

The circle and test their jabs.  Great single-leg snatch by Esparza, who takes top position as Alvarez pulls guard.  Esparza with a slam and now in side guard.  Esparza with knee on belly and throwing punches.  Alvarez recovers half-guard.  Nice work.  Esparza with short punches, trying to pass.  A very fast transition to back control by Esparza.  She’s on top of Alvarez, pounding away.  Alvarez is covering up.  Mount by Esparza.  Alvarez helpless.  Ref watching closely.  Esparza with great control as she continues to pound.  The ref has seen enough and steps in.  Esparza impresses… Alvarez, not so much.

RESULT: Esparza by TKO (punches), Round 1.

 

Featherweights

JULIA “THE JEWEL” BUDD
DANIELLE “THE HONEY BADGER” WEST

Round 1

West attacking, but Budd with the underhook and turns it around.  Budd with a knee.  West is a tough underdog.  Now Budd with good position.  West jumped guard, but Budd refused to go to the ground.  They exchange knees.  Big gut knee from Budd.  Nice work.  Grueling grappling here.  West with the big knee.  Now it goes to the ground, and Budd is on top and takes mount.  Budd throwing punches from the top.  West turns over.   More g-n-p from Budd.  But West with a nice escape.  Budd back on top and clubbing West.  It’s bloody.  The ref jumps in and that’s it!  Budd is a contender, folks.  Not many stronger women out there.

RESULT: Budd by TKO (punches), Round 1.

 

Atomweights

MICHELLE “THE KARATE HOTTIE” WATERSON
LACEY “THE LADIE” SCHUCKMAN

Round 1

Nice leg kick from Waterson, and another.  She’s moving well.  Shuckman attacking, but Waterson catches her with a kick and hurts her.  Schuckman gets the double-leg and Waterson looks for the guillotine, but no luck.  Schuckman takes mount and Waterman has to turn over.  Lacey pounds away and is trying to flatten Waterson out, looking for the rear naked.  It might be locked in now.  Waterman survives and turns to her side with Schuckman on top.  Shuckman inflicting damage, but Waterson recovers half-guard.  Schuckman looking for an Americana crank.  Absolutely dominating this round.  Waterson gets full guard, and now high guard.    Waterson looking for an armbar and almost gets it.  Now she’s on top and throwing punches.  They stand back up. Head kick ands for Waterson, but Lacey walks right through it.  She’s got double underhooks against the cage.  Schuckman a much bigger fighter it seems.  Waterson pinned against the fence.  But she throws a nice knee that connects to Lacey’s forehead.  The round ends.

Huge round for Schuckman who maintained control until the last minute.  10-9 for Schuckman.

 

Round 2

Big right lands for Waterson.  They tie up in the center of the cage.  Great fight.  Head kick misses for Schuckman.  And another.  Waterson with a leg kick, dancing well.  Oblique kick from Waterson, then an axe kick that lands!  But Schuckman catches the foot and now they are against the fence.  Schuckman trying to muscle Waterson to the ground, but good defense here.  It goes to the ground and Waterson is on Schuckman’s back, looking for a choke.  Bad position for Schuckman.  But she turns into half-guard and controls Waterson’s posture.   Schuckman with some rabbit kicks to the butt.  Waterson trying to pound away.  Schuckman stubbornly controlling Waterson’s posture.  The Karate Hottie can’t inflict much damage here.  Full guard for Schuckman now, who throws more rabbit kicks to Waterson’s lower back.  Now Waterson has some posture and pounding away.

An equally dominant round for Waterson there!  Great grappling.  10-9.

 

Round 3

Nice body kick from Schuckman, and then a head kick.  Right hand from Waterson.  Schuckman stalking as before.  Leg kick from Waterson.  And another.  A spinning heel kick barely misses for Waterson.  Fancy!  That would have hurt.  Schuckman trying to catch her, but Waterson too quick.  Leg kick from Waterson.  Finaly Schuckman attacks and pins Waterson to the fence.  She throws a knee and Waterson escapes.  Right hand for Waterson.  She needs to get more aggressive here, or Schuckman is going to win this round for attacking.  Again she gets to Waterson and they clinch.  Shuckman working hard for the takedown, defended well by Waterson.  Shuckman takes Waterson’s back, eats some elbows and finally drags her down.  Waterson again with the high guard.  She’s dangerous on her back.  Waterson throwing elbows from the bottom and an incredible sweep!  Waterson on top and locks in a body triangle.  Now a very high guard.  Great action!  But Schuckman is up and attacking.  Head kick from Waterson lands.  And a kick combo.  Front kick to the face!  Waterson is impressing at the end!  Fight of the night so far!  Wawa-wee-wa!

Incredibly tough round to score.  Both women had their moments.  We’re going to call it 10-9 barely for Waterman, giving her a 29-28 win.

RESULT: Waterson via Split Decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28), Round 3.

 

Bantamweights

RAQUEL PENNINGTON
CAT “ALPHA” ZINGANO

Round 1

Zingano very aggressive here.  She’s trying to muscle Pennington to the ground and throwing knees now.  Fascinating shorts on Zingano.  They’re clinched on the cage.  More knees from ZIngano.  Pennington with some knees to Zingano’s thighs and looking for a Thai clinch.  Big knee from Pennington.  Great trip takedown by Cat!  She’s in half-guard, moving toward side control, but Pennington is back up!  They’re clinching and exchanging knees.  Zingano now with her back to the fence.  She takes some knees from Pennington.  These women are working hard.  Big knees back and forth.  Double underhooks for Cat.  Knee trades. One connects with Pennington’s forehead.  Zingano bullying Pennington now.  But Pennington returning with knees.  Grueling clinch action.  And another trip takedown for Zingano and she throws some elbows at the bell!

Zingano controlled the action, and scored two takedowns.  10-9 for Cat.

Round 2

Side kick lands for Pennington.  They are circling and Zingano attacks.  Nice left hand.  Misses a right, and they clinch again.  Here come the knee exchanges.  More clinching and a nice knee to the head by Cat.  Whoever tires out is going to lose this fight.  Cat with a takedown attempt, well defended by Raquel.  But it’s Pennington whose back is on the cage.  Great belly-to-belly suplex by Zingano!  Knee on belly now, but back to side control.  Knee on belly again, Zingano looking for mount.  Pennington controlling, but Zingano gets the mount and starts smashing.  Raquel turns over.  Cat has hooks in.  She’s going for the choke.  Pennington hand fighting but she finally taps.  Impressive submission for the very strong Cat Zingano!

RESULT: Zingano via Submission (rear-naked choke), Round 2.

 

Flyweights

VANESSA PORTO
TARA LAROSA

LaRosa missed weight by 1.6 pounds, but the fight must go on.

Round 1

Nice leg kick from Porto, and a right hand.  Porto with blue-green hair.  She throws a huge right that lands on LaRosa’s cheek!  Porto stuffs a single-leg.  Leg kick from Porto.  She’s quicker than LaRosa.  Another huge right hand sends LaRosa to the mat!  She’s on her back now and Porto is peppering her with leg kicks.  The ref stands it back up.  Porto is dangerous.  She’s looking for another right hand.  LaRosa offering very little in this fight so far.  Nice combo from Porto.  And another combo.  Leg kick.  Another right hand drops LaRosa, again!  She’s on her back and Porto is kicking her legs.  Déjà vu.  Ref stands it up again.  LaRosa totally outclasses so far.  An inside leg kick hurts LaRosa.  She’s limping.  Porto is attacking that left leg, and this is not pretty.  Again.  Porto cautious but effective.  A right connects for Porto.  LaRosa landing nothing.

Dominant round by Porto.  Arguably a 10-8 for the knockdowns and leg damage.  Hell, let’s give it to her: 10-8 Porto.

Round 2

LaRosa more active, but a leg kick hurts her.  And a big right hand.  Another leg kick drops LaRosa to the ground.  Her left leg is minced meat.  Porto now fighting southpaw, but switches back to orthodox.  Another leg kick damages that left leg of LaRosa.  Porto throwing vicious right hands.  La Rosa landed a right there.  But her lead leg is getting destroyed by Porto’s kicks.  Nice lead right by Porto.  She’s picking LaRosa apart, but LaRosa is attacking!  Leg kick from Porto.  Nice flurry there, but nothing landed for LaRosa.  Leg kick slaps LaRosa’s shin.  Again!  How is LaRosa even standing with all that damage.  LaRosa looking to land a haymaker, but nice evasion by Porto.  LaRosa lands a Muay Thai knee.  A right hand lands for Porto and LaRosa is wobbled!  Porto attacks the leg again!  LaRosa is a tough customer, but is taking all kinds of damage.

Another clear round for Porto, 10-9.

Round 3

Big right from Porto.  Leg kick from LaRosa.  Another one finds the mark.  LaRosa is going to have a black-and-blue face after this fight.  Leg kick and LaRosa looks for a takedown with no luck.   Nice left hook from Porto.  Left connects for LaRosa.   She shoots again, but no chance.  Another right hand by Porto and LaRosa is a bobble-head.  Again!  LaRosa is taking so much damage.  She’s limping and barely in this contest.  LaRosa with a desperate shot and now a headkick that misses.  An overhand right for Porto and LaRosa with a shot that she almost executes.  LaRosa attacking, but Porto countering, and the fight ends.

Porto effective and untouchable.  10-9 for the 30-26 dominant victory.

Flyweights

AISLING “AIS THE BASH” DALY
BARB “LITTLE WARRIOR” HONCHAK

Daly sporting the bright pink hairdo and representing the Emerald Isle.  Honchak is from Iowa.

Round 1

Honchak with a  nice right hand.  Daly with some unusual high-stepping.  They clinch and Daly throws a knee to the body.  Is Daly auditioning for River Dance?  Some nice boxing from Honchak.  Sharp leg kick from Honchak.  Daly attacking now with some hard punches and a knee, but Honchak defending well.  Thai clinch for Honchak and she busts up Daly with some boxing.  They break.  Daly with a  nice right.  Attacking combo from Honchak stings Daly.  Daly connects with a  few right hands there.  Honchak more effective with the striking and clinching here.  Honchak with another collar tie and inflicting some damage.  They’re against the fence now and Honchak in control.  Daly getting outclassed here.  Punches to the body by Honchak, and a knee.  Honchak is controlling Daly from behind and the round ends.

Honchak put on a clinic there.  Daly has a golf-ball-sized mouse near her hairline.  10-9 Honchak.

Round 2

Left hook from Daly and she resumes her weird dancing.  Daly trying to turn it into a brawl now.  Daly jumps guard and is looking for an arm, but Honchak gets out and they’re back to their feet.  They clinch and Honchak drags Daly to the ground.  Daly looking for a kimura, but Honchak takes the back.  Both hooks are in and Honchak in control.  Daly to her back and Honchak starting to inflict some damage.  Half-guard for Daly.  Now Honchak takes her back again.  Daly is bleeding and trying to turn into Honchak’s guard, but good control for Barb.  The hooks are in again.  Hammer fist from Honchak.  Now she’s in mount and pounding.  Honchak controlling the back and looking for a face crank.  Daly completely stifled.  Some nice ground-n-pound to end the round for Barb.

Very dominant round for Honchak.  Daly has nothing to offer.  10-8 Honchak.

Round 3

Daly’s hematoma is rather gross at this point.  Daly looking to engage and with a great throw, putting Honchak on her back.  But Honchak is back to her feet now.  Honchak throwing now.  Daly looking to get inside, but Honchak busier with the boxing.  Honchak takes her to the ground and Daly is looking for a kimura again.   She lets go and Honchak into side control.  Daly turns to her knees and Honchak looking for the hooks.  Now Daly on her back in half-guard.  Hammer fist from Honchak.  She stands up and the ref stands Daly up.  Nice right hook by Daly.  Front kick misses for Daly.  Her shot is stuffed and she eats a knee.  Honchak drags her down yet again and is in back control.  Scrambling and Honchak transitioning from back to mount.  Big punches from the top.  Daly gets full guard.  Daly bloody and swollen.  Honchak on top still.  Daly stifled.  Honchak stands up and Daly comes after her.  Big right from Daly lands and another.  They are banging here.  Left from Daly and a right lands for Honchak.  Another big one and they end with a flurry.

Honchak is a tough customer and made Daly look like an amateur.  Another 10-9, giving her the 30-26 win.

Bantamweights

LESLIE “THE PEACEMAKER” SMITH
KAITLIN YOUNG

Round 1

They square up and clinch.  Big knee for Young.  Young with some dirty boxing.  She’s got Smith to the cage.  Smith looking for the collar tie.  Young with a leg kick and jab.  They bang.  Smith connects with a head kick.  They are slugging.  Now Young against the cage.  Reversal by Young.  They trade elbows.  And elbo from Young lands.  Kicks from Smith.  Smith connecting.  They trade knees.  Smith takes Young down, but Young looking for the arm bar.  Smith defending well.  Somewhat of a north-south position here.  Smith spins into side control and thros some hammers.  Young looking for the reverse triangle.  Smith out now.  Young on her back.  Up-kick by Young and Smith drops into Young’s guard.  Smith pounding, but Young always looking for an arm.   Great control for Smith.  She’s trying to pound Young.  Dominant end of round for Smith.

Great action here, but Smith got the takedown and did some damage on the ground.  Young attacking well from her back.  10-9 Smith.

Round 2

They bang in the center and Smith pushes Young to the cage.  Smith very effective with her striking her.  They;’re off the cage and Smith rolls for a kneebar!  She might get this.  Young defending.  They scramble, and Smith ends up on top.  Smith smashing, but Young looking for an arm again.  Side control for Smith.  Mounted crucifix and Smith is pounding Young.  Pounding and pounding and Young cannot get out.  This is ugly.  The ref steps in to save Young’s face from further punishment.  Smith is a badass!!!

RESULT: Smith by TKO (punches), Round 2.

 

Bantamweights

SHAYNA “THE QUEEN OF SPADES” BASZLER
SARAH “THE MONSTER” D’ALELIO

Round 1

Baszler looks very athletic.  Great body kick from Shayna.  Now they clinch.  Left from Baszler lands.  Leg kick from Sarah snaps.  Baszler takes D’Alelio down and is swarming on her.  Nice wrestling control by Baszler.  She’s taking D’Alelio’s back and stretching her out.  Not a good position for The Monster.  Baszler has both hooks in now.  She’s driving sharp elbows into Sarah’s ribs.  Sarah hand fighting and defending.  Baszler not letting up.  Sarah to her knees, hoping to stand, but Shayna like a cheap suit.  They scramble, but D’Alelio is just stuck.  Shayna throws some rights, but not much damage.  Baszler attacking Sarah’s ankle with heel strikes.  Now som e big lefts to the body and more heel strikes to the ankle.

Well, it’s official.  Shayna Baszler is the real monster here.  10-9 Shayna.

Round 2

Shayna gets a knee.  Sarah attacks and falls.  Baszler swarms with punches.  Now Baszler takes her back and locks in the rear-naked choke.  It’s deep and D’Alelio taps.  That’s it.  Utter domination by the Queen of Spades.

RESULT: Baszler via Submission (rear-naked choke), Round 2.

 

Atomweight Championship

JESSICA PENNE
NAHO “SUGI ROCK” SUGIYAMA

Round 1

Naho much smaller than Penne.  Penne flashing a jab.  Naho looking to get inside.  Left connects for Penne.  Hard left rocks Naho.  Penne catches Naho’s kick and now she’s on top and into full mount.  But Naho gets a butterfly guard.  Half-guard now.  Penne punching the ribs, looking to pass.  More punches to the ribs for Penne, showing good control.  Penne trying to free her right leg.   Naho holding tight.  Head punches by Penne.  Unusual half-guard position for Penne.  Penne  on top, but Naho using a grea butterfly guard.  Naho eats a knee on the way up.  Penne with some great jabs.  Hard right by Naho.  Penne gets the Thai clinch.  Naho gets a body lock.  Penne with an overhook and a knee.  Great grappling.  Naho back against the cage now.  Knees from Penne and it ends there.

Penne with the dominant position and inflicted some damage with her ground-and-pound.  10-9.

Round 2

Penne establishing that jab again.  Naho with leg kicks.  Penne with a nice combo and some knees from the clinch.  Penne drags Naho to the ground but ends up on her back.  She’s looking for a high guard with those monkey-style legs.  She’s locking in a triangle now.  Will she get it?  Penne pulling Sugi’s head down and locking it in.  Naho stacking her and trying to escape.  But that triangle is tight.  And Sugiyama can’t pull out of it.  She taps and we have a new 105-pound champion!

RESULT: Jessica Penne via Submission (triangle), Round 2.  She becomes the first every Invicta Atomweight Champion!
