[LIVE-SMACK!] Play-By-Play of UFC on FX 5: Browne vs. Silva

STUDIO MMA, AUSTIN, TX — We’re reporting from the lone star state tonight, although the fights are far away in Minnesota.  The prelims have been wild so far, featuring an amazing performance by Diego Nunes and a shocking comeback KO for Mike Pierce..  We begin our play-by-play tonight with the Castillo-Johnson lightweight scrap.  It’s going to be a great card, folks.  And get ready for the clash of the giants: Travis Browne and Bigfoot Silva.  Enjoy!

Lightweights

Danny Castillo
Michael Johnson

Johnson attacking first.  Castillo with a sharp leg kick.  He’s changing levels well.  Johnson and he now trade low kicks.  Castillo establishing his range.  Both men in and out with their attacks.  Castillo DROPS Johnson with a monstrous right hand.  He jumps on top and drops a plethora of vicious hammer fists.  Johnson in all kinds of trouble.  Castillo mounts, locking up Johnson’s right arm with his leg.  Now Castillo looking for the arm triangle.  It’s tight… but at long last Johnson escapes.  Nice start for Danny.  Castillo still on top in Johnson’s half-guard and they’re against the fence.  They scramble as Johnson looks for guard.  Good work by Castillo to maintain control.  He’s looking to pin that right arm again.  Castillo throwing some short elbows.  Johnson almost gets to his feet, but Castillo swarms.  This is a dominant round for the Alpha Male fighter.  Castillo ends up on top.

Castillo hurt Johnson badly and stayed on top for the entire round.  10-8 Castillo.

 

Round 2

Some tentative circling and leg kicks to being.  They circle and attack in and out.  But now Johnson lands a short-left uppercut that drops Castillo.  Johnson jumps on top and lands some heavy right hands as Castillo goes cross-eyed!  Rosenthal dives in to prevent more damage.  It’s all over!  Another big comeback KO!

RESULT: Johnson by KO (punches), Round 2.

 

Welterweights

JOSH NEER
JUSTIN EDWARDS

Bruce Buffer has announced that “we arrrre liiiiive!”  Two tough welterweights in the cage.  Giddyup.

Round 1

Edwards attacks and then looks for a double.  Neer ties him up with double underhooks.  Now Neer has Edwards in the air, but Edwards has locked in a guillotine!  They drop to the ground and Neer goes to sleep!  It’s all over!  Dayyyyammmmmm!  Just 45 seconds into the fight!

RESULT: Edwards by Submission (guillotine), Round 1.

 

Flyweights

JOHN DODSON
JUSSIER FORMIGA

Round 1

They circle.  Dodson testing with his jab.  Dodson throws a big left that lands.  And now a body shot.  Formiga throws a double-right that misses.  They clash in the center.  Dodson again to the body.  Nice combo from Formiga that Dodson dodges.  The speed not much of an advantage for Dodson yet.  Formiga just caught him with a  left hook.  Nice head movement from Jussier.  Again a body shot from Dodson.  Nice counter right from Formiga.  He’s evading well and countering well.  Dodson to the body and then misses with a right hook.  Formiga with a  very quick single-leg shot, but Dodson escapes.  Formiga throws a looping right.  Dodson having trouble getting inside.  Straight right lands for Formiga.  He shoots and they clinch briefly.  Dodson escapes.  Lots of boxing so far.  No damage on either side.  Boo birds sing.  Body kick from Formiga.

Slow round, but Formiga got the better of it.  10-9 Formiga.

 

Round 2

Dodson the southpaw, testing jabs again.  Formiga is looking just as fast.  Formiga countered with a nice right hook.  Dodson misses a huge left hook that Formiga ducks.  Dodson with a leg kick.  Formiga would like to take this to the ground it seems, despite looking good with his stand-up.  Both men lunging with their punches, but not connecting.  Dodson seems more cautious.  Nice left hook from Dodson.  Crowd booing steadily.  Dodson connected with a straight left as Formiga shot.  No damage.  Formiga controlling the center.  Dodson drops Formiga with a blistering left.  Formiga looks for a leg, but doesn’t get it.  He’s back to his feet now, but hurt.  Dodson looking to follow up on his good fortune.  Dodson throwing another huge left that misses.  He’s a strong flyweight.  Dodson with a left to the body and another left hook to the chin drops Formiga again!  He’s hurt bad and covering up.  Dodson swarms and throws some violent lefts to the prostrate Formiga.  The ref dives in and it’s over.  Yet ANOTHER great finish tonight.

Welterweights

JAKE ELLENBERGER
JAY HIERON

Round 1

They tap.  Big, strong welterweights about to clash.  Hieron won their first fight.  Hieron misses with a quick head kick.  Ellenberger taking his time.  Misses with a right hook.  Left hook misses for Jay.  Both men respect each other.  Leg kick from Jay.  Spinning heel kick skims off of Jake’s ribs.  Nice jab from Hieron.  Ellenberger misses over the top with a  right.  Nice movement by both men.  Leg kick from Hieron.  Left lands for Hieron then misses with a head kick.  Ellenberger with a hard combo that stunned Hieron.  Hieron is dancing now.  Head kick blocked by Ellenberger.  Misses with a spinning kick now.  Ellenberger with a striding uppercut that misses.  Hieron grabs a leg, but Ellenberger defends amazingly well and punishes Hieron with some punches as he defended!  Hieron with some sharp jabs that are falling short.  Body kick from Hieron lands.

Interesting round.  Ellenberger looking a bit tougher and landed the harder shots.  But Hieron may have landed more.  10-9 Ellenberger.

 

Round 2

Ellenberger misses an uppercut and Hieron hurts him with a counter left hook.  Head kick blocked by Hieron.  He’s controlling the center of the cage.  They trade jabs.  Ellenberger again looking for the upper cut.  Athletic kicks from Hieron.  Hieron with another shot for the single.  Ellenberger escapes.  Jake wants to get inside with another heavy combo.  Hieron doing better at a distance.  Ellenberger with a strong takedown in the center of the cage.  Now he’s in Hieron’s guard.  Ellenberger working the short elbows.  Hieron bleeding now.  Hieron does a great job with a hip escape, and he’s back to his feet.  Nice work.  Leg kick from Ellenberger and they trade left hooks.  Hieron throws another head kick.  And another.  Nothing hurting Jake.  Now a leg kick from Jay.  Ellenberger misses with a hard combo.  Now Ellenberger misses a head kick.  Hieron throws two in return that are blocked.  A sharp left lands for Hieron near the end of the round.

Hieron was busier, but Ellenberger got the takedown and cut Hieron with some elbows.  10-9 Ellenberger.

 

Round 3

Close fight, but it’s Ellenberger’s to lose.  Hieron needs to get busy here.  Jabs and a head kick miss for Jay.  Jake attacks and misses.  Hieron looking to counter.  Both men tentative.  A kick to the onions stops the action.  Ellenberger has some time to recover.  He’s ready and we’re back.  Hieron working that jab.  Now a head kick is blocked.  Hieron very active with a variety of strikes, but Ellenberger with another double-leg that takes Hieron to his back momentarily.  Hieron back up quickly and now throwing a lot of stuff.  Hieron with a nice left hook there.  He’s definitely throwing a lot more than the Juggernaut.  Jake with a sharp leg kick.  Neither men connecting now.  Ellenberger surprisingly cautious in this fight.  Hieron stuffs a shot.  Front kick from Hieron.  Head kick blocked by Ellenberger.  The crwod tires of the cautious approach of both men.  Hieron dancing when he should be attacking.  Ellenberger looks for a double and then lands a knee to the body.  Hieron running out of time here.  Head kick from Hieron lands as Jake attacks.  Ellenberger lands a winging left right before the horn and Hieron falls for a second.  That might have won the round for Jake.

Slow, boring round.  Hieron more active, but Ellenberger is the only one who effectively landed anything.  10-9 Ellenberger for the sweep 30-27.

RESULT: Ellenberger by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28), Round 3.

 

Heavyweights

Travis Browne
Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva

Round 1

Silva holding his hands very high.  Browne throws a haymaker, blocked.  Then a spinning heel kick that misses.  Nice right from Bigfoot lands.  Browne with a flying front kick that misses.  Interesting start.  Silva misses with a right.  Browne dancing a lot… strange movement.  Now they square up.  Silva with a sharp leg kick.  Another long right haymaker from Browne is blocked.  Silva answers with a head kick.  Now Silva looking for a takedown.  He’s got underhooks against the stage.  Some foot stomps from Bigfoot.  He hooks a leg, but Travis grabs the top of the cage.  Big warning from Herb Dean.  Thai clinch from Browne, but he can’t capitalize.  Back to the center.  Travis Browne’s left knee is messed up.  It amost snapped backwards as he attacked.  This could be bad if that leg collapses.  A huge overhand right from Bigfoot crumples Browne!  Silva swarms and drops some huge hammer bombs as Browne is face down.  Dean dives in and it’s all over.  Wow!  Bigfoot!  A massive win over the undefeated Browne!

RESULT: Silva by KO (punches), Round 1.
