[Breaking] Frankie Edgar to Featherweight

STUDIO MMA, VENICE, CA — In a much anticipated and debated move, former UFC lightweight champion, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar [14-3-1 MMA] has decided to drop 10 pounds and enter the Octagon in his next bout as a featherweight.  MMAFighting.com first reported the news today.  This decision comes just 10 days after Edgar’s very controversial decision loss to champion Benson “Smooth” Henderson [17-2-0 MMA].  Though UFC President Dana White has said that he would not compel Edgar to make such a move, the UFC brass is likely eyeing a featherweight super-fight between Edgar and current 145-pound champion Jose “Scarface” Aldo [21-1-0 MMA].

However, at the UFC 150 post-fight press conference, White made it clear that Edgar will not get an immediate title shot.  There are other contenders ahead of him in line.  Aldo defends his title at UFC 153 on October 13 against Eric Koch [13-1-0 MMA].  One fighter that would certainly be available for Edgar’s first go-around at featherweight would be former title challenger Chad Mendes [12-1-0 MMA], who is coming off a dominant TKO victory over Cody McKenzie [13-3-0 MMA].  Mendes is a very strong wrestler, and has a similar skill set to that of Edgar.  The two also happen to be the same height and body type.

One scenario that could play out would be an Aldo victory in October, followed by an Edgar victory in November or December.  This would set the stage for an Aldo-Edgar bout in early Spring 2013.
