Daniel Cormier Takes on Frank Mir in Final Strikeforce Bout
STUDIO MMA, RIVERSIDE, CA – Newly crowned Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champion Daniel Cormier will have his final Strikeforce bout against recent UFC title challenger and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir.
USA Today broke the news late Wednesday night.
There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense,” UFC President Dana White said. “The reality is… Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”
The two heavyweights will meet on a soon to be announced Strikeforce event.
Mir [16-6-0 MMA, 14-6 UFC] came up short in his title bit at UFC 147, suffering a second round TKO loss to reigning UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos. Prior, Mir captured three consecutive victories over Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Roy Nelson and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Meanwhile, Cormier [10-0-0 MMA, 7-0 SF] has taken the heavyweight division by storm, with back-to-back incredible performances. Knocking out Antonio Silva last September; followed by a five round beat down of former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett in May to earn the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix title. Cormier is currently recovering from a broken hand he sustained in the Barnett bout.
